   Our Zoo was founded in 1987 on the Shoal River. The first animals were goats and sheep. A monkey here and a parrot there, and for the next two years it grew into a small menagerie of exotic animals. Then in June of 1989 the park was flooded. This was a major setback for the zoo. All animals had to be evacuated to the present location on Deer Springs Drive. Basically, this meant building a new zoo in a matter of days. This was achieved with the help of local agencies, companies, farmers, and concerned citizens. Although it provided adequate homes for the animals, it left much to be desired as the zoo we envisioned. Over the years with dedication and perseverance we feel we have provided our animals with a happy home. We hope when you visit you feel the same pride and admiration for "your zoo" as we do. We are fully licensed for exhibition of exotic animals and wildlife. The Zoo is funded through guest admission fees, corporate, and personal donations.    Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo is today ranked the number-one family-friendly zoo in the U.S. (Parents Magazine) and recognized by the State of Florida as a center for Florida wildlife conservation and biodiversity (HB 457). The region's only dedicated zoological garden, Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo was designed to enhance quality of life in greater Tampa Bay as an affordable leisure destination and center for education and endangered species conservation. Natural outdoor exhibits for more than 1,700 animals from Florida and similar habitats include a Native Florida Wildlife Center and manatee hospital, Asian Gardens, Primate World, Free-Flight Aviaries, Wallaroo Station children's zoo, and Safari Africa.
