Not all good times with the family involve paying to park and standing in line forever to ride a mechanical teacup after putting up a mortgage payment for lunch. Take, for example, the corn maze at Long & Scott Farms - a great way to while away a few hours watching kids direct their parents through a corn maze and watching adults get back in touch with their inner kids. I highly recommend buying your ticket online and skipping any wait upon arrival. Hit the hay ride before everyone else decides to. Bring hand sanitizer. The food may not be anything fancy, but DO NOT miss buying a giant, deliciously cold and crisp pickle for $3. You'll pay about the same for a small kettle corn and some of the best lemonade to ever refresh you. The afternoon will fly by and you'll all head home happy and full and looking forward to looking back on a great memory.

I knew that there was a corn maze here but I was not expecting such a fun country store and cafe. I was also amazed by the selection and prices of all the pumpkins, gourds and local produce.
We came to do the corn maze but ultimately decided it was too hot that day to walk around in the sun. Instead we waited at the cafe while my brother and sister-in-law did the small maze. For a small maze it took quite some time and I'm told there is a big slide at the entrance. They also stated that the maze was not overly crowded with people so they were able to enjoy "finding their way".
While we were waiting we had a sloppy joe and a pork sandwich at the cafe. The sloppy joe was so tasty, and I appreciated it because you don't see those on the menu that often. We also watched kids having a blast on the hay ride.
In the store they had tons of fresh local produce including okra, peppers, tomatoes, potatoes, winter squash and more. We couldn't resist the fresh okra and butternut squash for such a low price. They also have wreaths and Indian corn outside, not to mention tons of pumpkins both the carving and heirloom style for very reasonable prices. This is a great place to gather items for fall decor.
Inside they have a store with lots of pickled veggies and jams, as well as candles, farm cheeses and some touristy tchotchkes and t-shirts.
I hesitate to give out a five star because the restroom situation isn't so great - it's only porta johns. The only option to wash your hands is a sink hidden at the back of the cafe, somewhat of a challenge to find after exiting the plastic potty dome. I would definitely return to this spot though for a fun fall day and I would do the maze once the weather is nice. It would be a great place to take kids for a simple day in the outdoors.

After reading in the Sunday Tampa Times about Long & Scott Farm, out in Mt. Dora, being the last grower of Zellwood Triple Sweet Corn, we just had to find the place. Two hours north of Riverview (home) we finally arrived. The directions on their website are spot on.
We love farm stands and this one didn't disappoint. It's almost the end of season for them so pickins were scarce but they had plenty of what we came for.
We were greeted by a very nice young man (the corn guy). When I asked him if we could taste the corn to see if it was cracked up to be. He pulled an ear from the bin, pulled back the husk and handed it to me telling me to take a bite. I took a bite of the raw corn and other than not being hot, drowning in butter and nicely salted you couldn't tell it was raw. Amazing!
We bought a dozen ears ($9.00), some cucumbers and a jar of orange honey.
They have a nice country store, cafe and a corn maze for the kids. We will bring our twin grandsons in the fall.
There is also a small cafe where we sampled their corn chowder and corn muffin. I like my corn chowder spicy so I add hot sauce. This was just spicy enough that I wouldn't add anything except a bigger spoon to get it in me faster.
If you don't go soon the next crop of corn will be ready in September. We'll be there, see ya!
